2026-27 CONCERT SEASON Mentored by the masters. Tickets available July 1st.

North Valley Symphony Orchestra (NVSO) is pleased to present its fourteenth season, bringing an affordable concert experience to the communities of the Phoenix North Valley. The 2026-27 season “Mentored by the Masters” includes four extraordinary musical performances honoring the teachers, mentors, and visionaries who shaped music for generations.

Inspiration becomes Influence— October 24, 2026 Explore some of our favorite pieces that reflect new inspiration in music. Hummel took a note from his mentor Hayden in composing the second truly chromatic trumpet concerto (Hayden’s was first – the valved trumpet had just recently been invented). Brahms celebrated his honorary Doctorate in Music with his Academic Festival Overture, and Britten describes the inner workings of the orchestra in his Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. A great concert to kick off the season and recognize World Teachers Day on October 5th!

Holiday Traditions and Transformations — December 19, 2026 Besides traditional holiday fare such as Guaraldi’s A Charlie Brown Christmas, we perform pieces that transform the original to new heights. Ellington reimagines Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker in a new way, McAlister combines two of Franck’s French carols in a classical mashup, and you’ve never heard Jingle Bells performed quite like Wasson’s imaginative arrangement. Enjoy the holidays with all your family and friends!

Influence becomes Innovation— March 13, 2027—This concert focuses on established forms and styles performed in innovative ways. Bernstein’s rousing Overture to Candide takes the form of Rossini’s opera overtures to a whole new level, Tchaikovsky takes a cue from Mozart in his Mozartiana Suite, Villa-Lobos gives a Latin beat to Bach in his Bachianas Brasileiras. Russian composer Balakirev mentors a young Naval officer named Rimsky-Korsokov in writing his Symphony No. 1, which has been deemed “the first Russian symphony” due to his heavy use of Russian nationalistic folk songs and themes.

Innovation becomes Iconic — May 22, 2027 Whether a symphonic piece has delighted audiences for centuries, or it is a more contemporary work, at some juncture it becomes iconic. For this concert, we are excited to perform music by four iconic composers from two eras — Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 with Wagner’s Die Meistersinger, and film composer Korngold’s King’s Row Suite with John Williams’ The Adventures of Indiana Jones and the Raider’s March. Music doesn’t get any better than this!
